Cardinal Dolan criticizes Catholic Health Association’s acceptance of HHS mandate

September 12, 2013

The Catholic Health Association’s decision to accept the Obama administration’s implementation of the HHS mandate has been “less than helpful,” Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York said at a September 11 press conference.

“We have not, ourselves as bishops, been able to arrive at the same conclusion, that accommodation with HHS is that easy,” said Cardinal Dolan, according to a Catholic News Service report.

“There’s no way that we’re ready to say that yet,” he added, as he pledged to “rally our people” to challenge the mandate.

I think the cardinal's use of the word 'yet' is telling.

"It may be that some there will not obey the message we send you in this letter. If so, take note of them and have nothing to do with them, so that they will be ashamed. But do not treat them as the enemies; instead, warn them as believers." 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 This is another one of the passages in the NT that gets edited out of the readings at Mass.

CHA, CRS...none of them seem to listen to the bishops.

Rather than Dolan's obsequiously diplomatic "less than helpful," would that he had relied on St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 5: 11-13, which itself comes from Moses's Deuteronomy 13: 6 (but 5 in Douay-Rheims), which of course ultimately came from YHWH on Mt. Sinai: "Expel the wicked man from your midst."
