The chairman of the US bishops' foreign-policy committee has urged Secretary of State John Kerry to work for a ceasefire in Syria and the beginning of negotiations to resolve that country's civil war.
The August 29 letter from Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, asked Kerry to enlist other world leaders in efforts to promote a peace "that respects human rights and religious freedom" in Syria. The bishop's letter was released as Washington policy-makers weighed plans for a military strike against the Assad government.
