Pope pleas for peace in Sri Lanka, as priests are asked to leave battle zone

During his regular weekly audience on February 4, Pope Benedict made a plea for peace in Sri Lanka, and asked both government and rebel troops to "show respect for humanitarian law and for people's freedom of movement." With tens of thousands of civilians trapped between the warring parties, Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa asked for Catholic priests to lead the civilian population in an evacuation of the endangered region.
