English bishop praises Community of St. John
June 12, 2013
An English bishop has expressed strong support for the Community of St. John, after reports that the group’s founder had been involved in sexual misconduct.
Bishop Thomas McMahon of Brentwood described the Community of St. John as a “great blessing” to his diocese.
In May the leaders of the Community of St. John informed members that the group’s beloved founder, Father Marie-Dominique Philippe, had improper relations with women who were under his spiritual direction. Bishop McMahon remarked: “Obviously it’s a matter of sadness whenever someone falls short of what we’re called to be.” Nevertheless he said that the “good work Father Philippe founded” endures.
