India: millions of women sterilized in government program
Catholic World News - June 12, 2013
An estimated 4.6 million women in India have been sterilized—often under pressure and without adequate understanding—as part of that government’s aggressive family-planning program, the AsiaNews service reports.
In India’s most poverty-stricken regions, women are offered financial incentives to undergo tubal ligations. Many of the women accept the incentive out of desperate need. Some, especially those who are illiterate, do not understand the consequences of the procedure.
