Cardinals to meet Monday, set date for conclave

March 01, 2013

The first congregation of cardinals during the sede vacante period will meet on Monday, March 4.

That first meeting of the cardinals will probably set a date for the beginning of the conclave that will elect a new Roman Pontiff. The conclave is likely to begin roughly one week later.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the dean of the College of Cardinals, formally summoned all cardinals to Rome with a letter dated March 1, the first day after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI took effect.

The congregation will meet in the Synod Hall at 9:30 am. In what may be an indication of plans to proceed quickly with the business of the College, Cardinal Sodano said that a second meeting would be held on Monday afternoon at 5, and these meetings would continue the conclave begins.
