New saints to be canonized May 12
CWN - February 12, 2013
At a consistory held on February 11, Pope Benedict XVI approved plans for the canonization of several new saints:
- Antonio Primaldo and his companions, martyred in 1480;
- Laura di Santa Caterina da Siena Montoya y Upegui (1874-1949), foundress of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Mary Immaculate and St Catherine of Siena; and
- Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala, co-foundress of the Congregation of the Handmaids of St Margaret Mary (Alacoque) and the Poor.
The canonizations will take place on May 12.
The announcement of the impending canonizations—which had been expected—was thoroughly overshadowed when Pope Benedict shocked the consistory by informing the assembled cardinals of his intention to resign.
