Catholic school closings: 2,000 since 1990

January 19, 2009

More than 2,000 Catholic schools in the United States have closed since 1990, half of them in the past eight years, according to an article published yesterday in the New York Times. Enrollment is down by over half since its peak four decades ago.

Two dioceses-- Wichita and Memphis-- are cited as experiencing an increasing Catholic school enrollment. The Diocese of Wichita, which has charged no tuition for Catholic schools since 2002, encourages the faithful to donate up to 8% of their income.
