In one of the largest demonstrations in recent French history, up to a million citizens marched in Paris on January 13 to protest the government’s efforts to legalize same-sex marriage. According to organizers of the march, one million were present, though police put the number at 340,000.
Following the protest, the nation’s justice minister announced that the government would not alter its plans to introduce legislation and that there would be no referendum on the issue.
