2.3 million attended papal audiences, ceremonies in 2012
CWN - January 03, 2013
More than 2.3 million people attended public audiences or liturgical celebrations at which Pope Benedict XVI presided in 2012.
Year-end statistics furnished by the Prefecture of the Papal Household showed that 447,000 people attended one of the Pope’s weekly public audiences, and 1,256,000 attended his Sunday Angelus audiences either at the Vatican or at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. Another 146,000 people participated in private audiences with the Pontiff.
The prefecture reported that 501,000 people attended liturgical celebrations at which the Pope presided. All of these figures are based on careful estimates recorded for each event. The statistics do not include the Pope’s appearances abroad.
Since Pope Benedict’s election in 2005, a grand total of over 20.5 million people have attended one of his audiences or liturgical ceremonies at the Vatican.
