Indian martyr beatified

Devasahayam Pillai (1712-52), a convert from Hinduism who suffered martyrdom, has become the first Indian layman to be beatified.
Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided over the beatification, which took place in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
