Do 'Soho Masses' block English prelate's route to a red hat?

November 02, 2012

William Oddie of London's Catholic Herald relays the report that Archbishop Gerhard Müller, the new prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has been investigating complaints about the "Soho Masses" organized by homosexual groups. The Vatican's involvement would be welcome, Oddie argues, because the Westminster archdiocese has failed to take action, creating confusion about the Church's attitude toward same-sex activities.

Oddie suspects that Vatican intervention could preserve Archbishop Vincent Nichols from the criticism that would arise if he stepped into the controversy. It could also remove an obstacle to his elevation to the College of Cardinals.
