The French National Assembly has approved a proposal to provide full public funding for abortion.
The lower house of the French parliament passed legislation that would offer full insurance coverage for abortions. The government currently covers abortion costs for the poor and for young women, but the proposal would extend that coverage to women who would be able to meet the cost of abortion themselves. The legislation also provides free contraception for teenage women.
The legislation now goes to the senate, where approval is expected.
