Filipino bishop: don't vote for proponents of copper mining
CWN - October 12, 2012
A Filipino bishop has instructed the faithful not to vote for political candidates who favor development of copper and gold mines in the Mindanao region.
“Do not vote for those who favour open-pit mining because they’re villains of the environment,” said Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez of Marbel. The bishop said that diocesan workers will be conducting voter-education activities to “enlighten people about the evils of open-pit mines.” The Marbel diocese includes a site where mining companies hope to tap the largest reserves of copper and gold in southeast Asia.
