Syrian opposition leader to visit Vatican, meet with Pope

September 19, 2012

George Saba, a leader of Syria’s opposition forces, will visit the Vatican this weekend, the Adkronos news agency has reported.

Saba, a member of the Syrian National Council, will participate in a conference of Christian Democratic leaders. The 120 participants in the conference will meet with the Pontiff in a private audience. Saba will meet with other Vatican officials during his stay in Rome.

The visit to Rome by the Syrian leader will furnish Vatican officials with an opportunity to address complaints that Catholic Church has tilted toward the Assad regime by calling for an end to the fighting in Syria. Church leaders have expressed concern that a rebel victory could result in a setback for religious freedom for Syria's Christian minority.
