Cardinal George to begin chemotherapy next week
August 29, 2012
Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, who revealed earlier this month that he has been diagnosed with cancer for the 2nd time, will begin chemotherapy next week.
Cardinal George, who is 75, had undergone radical surgery in 2006 to remove his bladder and prostate; he had subsequently been declared cancer-free. But two weeks ago doctors found cancers in his liver and kidney.
The cardinal will receive a series of chemotherapy treatments over a 4-month period. He has announced that he plans to maintain his usual work schedule, although he will cut down on public appearances to safeguard his immune system, which will be weakened by the treatment.
