Christians at risk as Syria begins 'slide into hell'
Catholic World News - June 12, 2012
"Syria has started its slide into hell,” the apostolic nuncio in that country has told the AsiaNews service.
Archbishop Mario Zenari warned that the escalation of violence, and the factionalism that is emerging, could trouble Syria for decades. Both the Assad regime and the opposition have been accused of human-rights violations, including the use of children as shields for combatants.
In the town of Homs, most Christians have apparently fled after receiving an ultimatum from the leader of opposition forces there. In nearby Qusayr, remaining Christians are being harassed by opposition fighters, who are generally aligned with militant Islam.
