Vermont man, winner in sex-abuse lawsuit, offers to donate funds to charity if...

December 18, 2008

A Vermont man who has been awarded more than $3 million by a jury in a sex-abuse case says that he will give his award to charity if the diocese agrees to identify, defrock, and cut off payment for priests who have been credibly accused of molesting children. Bishop Salvatore Matano of Burlington, who took office in 2005, told reporters that he would be interested in talking with the plaintiff, David Navari, about the terms of his offer. Navari said that if the diocese met his conditions, "I will take all of the award money from this case and put it into a trust for needy parents to send their kids to Catholic schools in the Burlington area."
