Kenyan bishop files new lawsuit against Irish TV network for false charges

May 16, 2012

A Kenyan Catholic bishop has filed a lawsuit against the Irish RTE television network, saying that he was defamed by the same program that inaccurately accused an Irish priest of rape.

Bishop Philip Sulumeti of Kakamega says that his good name was sullied by a “Mission to Prey” broadcast in which he was quoted as giving a favorable reference to Father Kevin Reynolds. The RTE broadcast said that Father Reynolds was in fact guilty of rape. That claim was later shown to be false, and RTE has already paid a large libel settlement to Father Reynolds.

The false charges in the “Mission to Prey” broadcast led to the cancellation of the program and the resignation of several RTE executives.
