Uruguay's president quits party after veto of abortion bill
December 11, 2008
Uruguay's President Tabare Vazquez has resigned from the Broad Front coalition, citing the party's support for a bill that would have legalized abortion in the country. President Vazquez, who is a physician, exercised his veto power to stop the legislation, saying that government should provide more help for women facing problem pregnancies. The president also said that he would not seek re-election in 2009. His withdrawal is a major blow to the Broad Front, which has seen its popular support ebbing as the election approaches.
