Castro critics vow presence at Pope's public appearances in Cuba

The Women in White, a prominent group opposing the Castro regime, has announced plans to have representatives at all public appearances by Pope Benedict XVI during the Pontiff’s visit to Cuba on March 26-28.
Berta Soler, the leader of the Women in White, told reporters that the government was trying to persuade the group to stay away from public events during the papal visit. The women will refuse to accede to that request, she said. “In the face of repression, we become more united and stronger.”
Cuban authorities arrested several members of the group last weekend, although they were quickly released. Soler charges that the Castro regime has stepped up its efforts to quiet political opponents in the days before the papal visit.
