EWTN sues to block HHS mandate
CWN - February 09, 2012
The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) has filed a lawsuit to block implementation of the Obama administration’s policy calling for mandatory coverage of contraception and sterilization in all employers’ health plans.
Urging the court to rule the policy unconstitutional, EWN became the first lay Catholic organization to file suit against the mandate. Two institutions of higher education, Belmont Abbey College and Colorado Christian University, have already filed suit.
EWTN president Michael Warsaw said that the broadcaster chose legal action because “we feel the best possible resolution to this matter is likely to come from the courts.” He explained that any legislation introduced to roll back the mandate would require the signature of President Obama, “and that is not very likely.”
