Most Bulgarian Orthodox bishops had ties with Communist regime

All but 4 of Bulgaria’s 15 Orthodox bishops cooperated with the country’s secret police under the Communist regime, newly released archive documents show.
Patriarch Maxim, the 97-year-old prelate who has led the Bulgarian Orthodox Church since 1971, is one of the few bishops not accused of collaboration.
