Indonesian bishops’ official: priests should steer clear of politics

October 25, 2011

An official of the Indonesian Bishops’ Conference is emphasizing that politics is the realm of the laity, not of the clergy.

“Lay people should not get bishops or priests into practical politics,” said Father Antonius Benny Susetyo, executive secretary of the bishops’ commission for ecumenical and interreligious affairs. “Getting them involved means that lay people have no self-confidence.”

“The hierarchy’s role is merely to guide in terms of morality,” he added.

Good for these Indonesian bishops. Let American bishops join them in telling the Pontifical council at the Vatican to do the same. It would be a disaster if the recommendations emanating for the offices of these pinheads became church doctrine.
