Archbishop Dolan urges US bishops to preach on poverty, unemployment

Catholic World News - September 20, 2011

The president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is urging his brother bishops to “focus public attention and priority on the scandal of so much poverty and so many without work in our society.”

“46 million people (15%) now live in poverty in the United States,” Archbishop Timothy Dolan said as he asked US bishops to “continue do all you can to lift up the human, moral and spiritual dimensions of the ongoing economic crisis … preaching, educating the faithful and advocating on behalf of the poor and jobless.”

“Our Catholic tradition begins with respect for the life and dignity of all, requires a priority concern for poor and vulnerable people, reflects the ties and bonds of solidarity, respects the mutual relationships of subsidiarity, and promotes the dignity of work and protection for workers,” he added.

Never have we experienced a national struggle for survival like this. Who is not touched in some way by the collapse of everything around us? We need the Bishops to shepherd us: to call on Our Blessed Mother as patroness of the United States and Mediatrix of all Graces; instruct us on the Mystical Body; unify us in prayer for pardon for our nation's sinful disrespect for the dignity of human life. Lead us to rededicate ourselves to God's will. Plead for his mercy. Live our faith.

So, do the Bishops advocate mobilizing the substantial holdings of the USCCB and the dioceses to giving direct assistance to the poor? Hasten the day!
