100th anniversary of birth of Small Is Beautiful author
CWN - August 16, 2011
Writing in the National Catholic Register, Joseph Pearce pays tribute to economist E. F. Schumacher (1911-77), author of Small Is Beautiful and a convert to Catholicism.
“Schumacher’s lasting legacy is to illustrate that subsidiarity … has worldwide popular appeal,” writes Pearce. “Schumacher counteracted the idolatry of giantism with the beauty of smallness. People, he argued, could only feel at home in human-scale environments, of which the family was the archetype.”
