Trust God in times of trouble, Pope reminds audience

Catholic World News - August 08, 2011

At this Angelus audience on Sunday, August 7, Pope Benedict XVI spoke on the importance of placing trust in God at all times, especially in times of danger and difficulty.

Reflecting on the day’s Gospel reading, which retold the story of Jesus walking across the water to the disciples in their storm-tossed boat, the Pope said that the storm represents all “the many troubles that oppress man,” whereas the boat symbolizes “the Church built on Christ and led by the apostles.” The lesson for today’s faithful, he said, is to be sure of Christ’s help.

The Pope cited the words of St. Augustine, who imagined giving this advice to St. Peter, trying to walk across the waves: “On your own, you cannot stand up. Squeeze the hand that comes down to you.”
