Pius XII saw 'miracle of the sun," note reveals

November 06, 2008

A previously unpublished note written by Pope Pius XII-- which was found in the Pacelli family archives and has been included in the current Vatican exhibit on pontificate of Pius XII-- shows that the wartime Pontiff observed the "miracle of the sun" on four different occasions. The Pontiff reported that the phenomenon occurred just before and after he solemnly defined the dogma of the Assumption in 1950.

The "miracle of the sun" is most frequently associated with the Marian apparitions at Fatima, where thousands of people witnessed it. The Virgin Mary had told the Fatima seers that the miracle was intended to encourage belief in her message.
