Syria's Christians worried by uprising, government crackdown
Catholic World News - May 10, 2011
In a conversation with Vatican Radio, Melkite Catholic Archbishop Jean Jeanbart of Aleppo reports that the Syrian government's brutal crackdown on political demonstrations has caused alarm for the Christian population.
Readily acknowledging the need for movement toward freedom and democracy in Syria, the Melkite prelate noted that radical Islamic leaders have been involved in the recent unrest, and innocent people have been caught up in the ensuing violence. "Everybody wants more freedom but no one want civilian war or this kind of violence," he says.
