Spanish government plans to liberalize abortion law May 07, 2008

In Spain, the ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) plans to extend the limits of legal abortion.

The PSOE will seek to make abortion legal through the first 16 weeks or pregnancy, the ABC newspaper reports. Spanish law currently allows abortion through the first 14 weeks-- or 22 weeks if the baby is found to be malformed.

The main opposition party, the People’s Party, has announced its opposition to any liberalization of the country’s abortion law.
