Ugandan Rebels Destroy Catholic Radio Station; 2 Killed September 30, 2002

KAMPALA, Sep 30, 02 (CWNews.com) -- Ugandan rebels burned down a Catholic radio station in the northern town of Lira this weekend.

The rebels, affiliated with the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) stormed St. Peter's parish and set fire to Radio Wa, a local broadcaster. Two employees at the station were killed in the attack, and the entire broadcasting facility was demolished.

"Their main target was the radio," said Father John Fraser, the director of Radio Wa. "They went straight into the studio, poured petrol on the wall,… lobbed in grenades… They spend about 15 minutes and everything was over.

Although the LRA rebels claim to be fighting so that Uganda can be ruled in accordance with the Ten Commandments, they have recently attacked several Christian institutions in northern Uganda. On September 20, LRA rebels had burned down a parish church affiliated with the Pentecostal Assemblies of God in the same Lira region. .
