Catholic Recipe: Bread Dessert

    INGREDIENTS

  • 3 quarts milk
  • 1 cup honey
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • grated rind of 1 lemon
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 loaves French bread
  • 12 eggs, beaten
  • cinnamon sugar powder

DIRECTIONS

Combine milk, honey, cinnamon sticks, lemon rind, sugar, salt in a deep saucepan. Simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Cut bread in half-inch slices. Dip 1 slice at a time into mixture, lightly coating each slice. Dip slices into beaten eggs. Fry in oil until light brown. Serve on platter; sprinkle freely with cinnamon sugar. Serve cold. Yield, 15-20 servings
