Catholic Recipe: Paprika Cheese Straws

    INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup finely grated American cheese (or cheddar cheese)
  • 1/3 cup milk

These "straws" are part of the suggested menu for New Year's Eve Midnight Menu, accompanying the game hens.

DIRECTIONS

Mix and sift flour, baking powder, and salt; cut in shortening and cheese until mixture is like coarse corn meal. Add milk; mix well. Roll pastry 1/8 inch thick; sprinkle generously with paprika; cut into strips about 3 inches long and 1/4 inch wide. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 425° for 5 to 7 minutes. Makes about 90.
