Colonial Americans did take many traditions from England. Wassail at Christmas is one. This is a version with red wine and dry sherry. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton might have toasted with a glass of wassail on Christmas.

DIRECTIONS

Boil the sugar, cinnamon sticks, and lemon slices in 1/2 cup of water for 5 minutes and strain. Discard the cinnamon sticks and lemon slices. Heat but do not boil the remaining ingredients. Combine with the syrup, and serve hot.
