Catholic Recipe: Red Wine Cookies

    INGREDIENTS

  • 11 cups flour
  • 6 teaspoons baking powder
  • 11 tablespoons allspice
  • 4 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups shortening
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups sweet red wine
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

This recipe is part of the Sicilian tradition of the St. Joseph Altar.

DIRECTIONS

Sift flour, baking powder, allspice and cinnamon together. Add sugar and mix well. Work shortening into mixture. Add eggs, wine and pecans. Roll out into small pieces and squeeze with three fingers to form peaks on cookies. Place on greased baking sheet and bake in 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes.
