Catholic Prayer: Litany of Saint Augustine of Kent

Description:

This litany is from St. Benedict's Manual (1875); its origin and authorship not now known but evidently written by English Benedictines since one petition speaks of "preaching the Gospel to our forefathers" and another calls St. Augustine "our Patron Saint" which he may well be for O.S.B. in England but not elsewhere.

Prayer:

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. God, the Father of Heaven, Have mercy on us. God, the Son, Redeemer of the world, Have mercy on us. God, the Holy Ghost, Have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God, Have mercy on us.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us. Holy Mary, by Saint Augustine devoutly honored, Pray for us. Saint Augustine, Pray for us. St. Augustine, glory of the Catholic Church, Pray for us. St. Augustine, elected vessel of the Holy Ghost, Pray for us. Great Apostle of England, Pray for us. Renowned Apostle of Gentiles, Pray for us. Glorious defender of the Catholic Faith, Pray for us. Thou our Patron Saint, Pray for us.

In all our wants of body and soul, Help us by thy intercession. In all dangers, Help us by thy intercession. In all tribulations, Help us by thy intercession. In temptations of the flesh, the world and the evil spirit, Help us by thy intercession. In case of sickness, Help us by thy intercession. In poverty and famine, Help us by thy intercession. In danger of losing the Catholic Faith, Help us by thy intercession. In the hour of our death, Help us by thy intercession.

That God may humble the enemies of the Catholic Faith, Make intercession for us. That all heresies may be extinguished, Make intercession for us. That the spirit of infidelity may be checked, Make intercession for us. That all prodigal children may return to the true Church of Christ, Help us by thy intercession. That our faith may never cease, Help us by thy intercession. That our hope may continually increase, Help us by thy intercession. That we may perpetually love God with a sincere heart, Help us by thy intercession. That the English nation may return to the Catholic Faith, which thou hast preached to their forefathers, Help us by thy intercession. That we may escape eternal condemnation and the everlasting fire of hell, Help us by thy intercession. That we may be saved through Jesus Christ, Help us by thy intercession. That we may be taken up to Heaven to see the eternal Glory of God, Help us by thy intercession. That we may never lose the grace and love of our heavenly Father, Help us by thy intercession.

Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world: Spare us, O Lord. Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world: Graciously hear us, O Lord. Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world: Have mercy on us, O Lord.

V. Intercede for us, O holy Augustine, great Apostle of England: R. That we may be wade worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. O God Who, in the conversion of the Gentiles, hast mercifully granted the pious prayers of Saint Augustine, Confessor and Bishop: vouchsafe to grant through his merits and intercession, that we, bewailing our sins, may be consoled by the gift of Thy graces through Jesus Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.
