PROVISION

Any concession of an ecclesiastical office. Thus the designation of a cleric to any office is called provision. The only legitimate ways of obtaining an ecclesiastical office are by free appointment, election, postulation, nomination, or investiture: all modes of provision. Only two conditions are necessary: fitness of the candidate in the judgment of s superior, and vacancy in an office.
