NICHE
A recessed space or hollow in a wall usually to hold a statue, affording it protection. With Gothic builders who introduced sculpture, incorporating it sa part of the building, the canopy niche appeared, often a fine composition of light and shade, later elaborately decorated. The wall was sometimes deeply recessed and a pedestal added to elevate the statue.
