CUJUS REGIO, EJUS RELIGIO
The phrase "whose rule, his religion" summed up the religious peace during the Reformation. It meant that a political ruler had the right to determine the religion of his territory. His subjects had the alternative of moving to another state or country where their own religion was accepted. This principle ignored all the rights of conscience and mainly explains how entire nations, for centuries Catholic, suddenly became Protestant.
