Off the Record
the enemy of my enemy is my friend

Frances Kissling, doyenne of the virulently anti-Catholic group that is laughingly known as "Catholics" for a Free Choice, hold firmly to the belief that the only good Catholic is a bad Catholic. So it's interesting to note that she shows a great deal of sympathy for the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. It's not just that the LCWR is being investigated by the Vatican-- although being at odds with the Vatican is usually a sure-fire way to gain Kissling's sympathy. It's also that the liberal religious orders belonging to the LCWR have never made life difficult for Kissling and her cronies in the abortion industry:
One sister I know is a clinic escort at her local reproductive health clinic; others are active in gay and lesbian ministries and one, close to 90, has been a leader in the movement for sex worker rights. They fasted for the Equal Rights Amendment, spoke out in favor of women priests and choice, marched with Martin Luther King, and thought John Paul II was a disaster.
We -- feminists and progressive Catholics -- love them.
In other news, members of the LCWR say they just don't understand why the Vatican is worried about their loyalty to the Church. Frances Kissling loves them; why doesn't the Holy See?

As Saint Teresa of Avila noted, "all things are passing," as am I, as is Frances Kissling and the Sisters of Mercy, and all those women ("Nuns" being an often offensive term to them) who clung to their vocational name of Sister while doing their best to undermine their Church and their family of God. Too bad that they also gave up confession.
