Off the Record

the low-key family

By Diogenes (articles ) | January 09, 2008 4:10 PM

He's divorced. He's had a highly publicized adulterous affair with the wife of a subordinate. He canceled a trip to Rome to protest Church teaching against same-sex adoption. He has unilaterally approved marriage licenses for homosexual couples, and issued a proclamation honoring a gay porn producer. But after he won re-election, San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom decided that his inauguration day should begin with Mass at the famous Mission Dolores Basilica. It was planned as a "low-key" event, the mayor's staff said; a family affair.

Family, Your Honor? What family? What's a family?

It's time for the bishop of San Francisco to speak up about the mayor and his lack of conformity to Catholic teaching. The mayor evidently feels he is exempt from the rules of the Church; and, ostensibly, the bishop must think so,too.

ANd the Archbishop, if he were to do his job and set a proper example, would prohibit such a thing from happening. But he probably won't
