Off the Record

dash-2 too

By Diogenes (articles ) | October 31, 2007 10:29 AM

The Bishop of Breda (Netherlands) Martinus "Tiny" Muskens caught our attention earlier this year with a number of consciously provocative remarks, among them the suggestion that popes should have a term limit of ten to fifteen years. OTR modestly suggested that Tiny put his guilders where his dentures are by taking early retirement himself.

Today we read the glad news that the Holy Father has accepted Muskens's resignation three years ahead of his sell-by date under the Canon 401-dash-2 provision. We wish him a happy, healthy, and dolphin-safe senectitude.

This is almost too sad to comment. The whole thing is a train wreck. Women's ordination? We've been ordaining women for years and look where it has brought us...

If I had to choose between winning the lottery and seeing 3/4 of the American episcopacy gutted, starting with California, I would choose gutting the American episcopacy. From my neck of the woods no one wearing a mitre is in any particular hurry to honestly implement Summorum Pontificum.

The Pope if he would, could apply CC 401.2 to some of California's archbishops and require a retired Cardinal to shut-up and enjoy retirement. Looking over other areas of the USA, it could come in handy also.
