A trenchant observation by James Taranto.
The Concord (N.H.) Monitor reports on a hilarious pronouncement from the lovely and talented John Edwards:
Like other Democrats, Edwards named his top three priorities as ending the war in Iraq, enacting universal health care and overhauling the American energy system. "Those are three things instantly I would do," he said.
Instantly! Gosh, what's he going to do on Jan. 21? It's so cute the way Democrats complain that the president has too much power, but then imagine they would be omnipotent if elected.
Taranto's on target regarding Edwards, but regrettably this notion of government -- an Olympus from which divinities direct the lives of mortals -- is not limited to the Democratic Party. Modern politicians are always trying to create some paradisal future that they can lead us into.

Well, if they do that, are they going to make laws that force FIFA to allow children to play professional soccer? After all, those children are being discriminated against. Poor children . . . not being allowed to play professional sports.

If I may deviate and do an end around on this topic, I'll take the same quote highlighted by Minnesota Mary and extrapolate it to the marriage problem. If the Church and bishops rallied to the defense of marriage when no-fault divorce was being forced upon everyone and stood up for the sacrament - we wouldn't even be discussing homosexual unions in this day and age. And that's why though we should be fighting against gay marriage, we should also be fighting for real marriage with equal fervor.

"By and large the bishops--not only in Britain--failed to rally and fight for this ground. Having ceded the main pass to the Church's adversaries, they can hardly be shocked to learn that the war has moved beneath their windows." The above statement says it all. Some bishops and priests have been anxiously waiting for the State to step in and force these changes on the Church since they, themselves, couldn't get the Church to make these ordinations. Well, they can go on waiting.
