Teacher: Sister Mary
OK class, take out your paper and a pencil.
Here’s the quiz problem for the day.Pay attention, it’s a word problem with rounding.
The new cathedral costs approximately $200 million dollars. In addition, diocesan legal bills are now estimated at about $625 million. Rounding your answer to the nearest $1000, estimate how much diocesan money Cardinal Mahony has had to spend on these two projects each day he has been Archbishop of Los Angeles. Remember class, Cardinal Mahony has been Archbishop of Los Angeles since 1985...
(Answer: $106,000 per day)

Hey, $106,000, here, $106,000, there, pretty soon, you're talking real money.

The LA Diocese's "core ministry" is the chancery.

If forking over 200 + million won't effect "core ministeries" that implies that there has been a whole bunch of excess money floating around unused for awhile....or that LA's definition of "core ministeries" is pretty narrow. Focusing on what the Catholic Church truely teaches would probably be too much to ask as that might exceed the $$$ available after the judgement is paid.

Cardinal Mahony could raise money by selling his cathedral to Muslims for a mosque. It wouldn't be painful for that to happen. Add a few minarets here and there and it would be perfect. Although Muslims might want something beautiful, it would look somewhat better than the local mosque here in our city.

Uncle Di, I think Sister Mary hasn't accounted for the dough in the couch cushions in the chancery office.

Well, as has been famously, but, probably, erroneously, attributed to the late Everett Dirksen: "A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon, you're talking real money."

That's all right. The money won't have an impact on the archdiocese's core ministry. We have the assurance of the Ordinary. I guess that means priests will still be able to say Mass and hear confessions.

I just returned from NYC and visited St. Patrick's Cathedral. What an improvement over Mahony's monstrosity. Question: How much did it cost to have one foot added to its lenght to have the LA bldg. be that much longer than St. Pat's? So much for an ego trip? Let's hope it ends there.
