Scottish surprise

By Jeff (articles ) | Sep 28, 2003

According to this Web site, there have been two Scottish cardinals since the beginning of the twentieth century: Archbishop Gordon J. Gray of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh (1969) and Archbishop Thomas J. Winning of Glasgow (1994).

It surprises me that Archbishop Keith O'Brien of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh, and not Archbishop Mario Conti of Glasgow, is the new Scottish cardinal. In April 2002, Archbishop O'Brien said, "I have no problems with celibacy withering away. There is no great theological argument against celibacy ending, nor any theological problem with it ending. A number of priests are very happy being celibate but the loss of celibacy would give greater liberty to priests to exercise their God-given gift of love and sex rather than feeling they must be celibate all their lives. It would not cause me any great worry if it was to go."

There's that word again...."feeling"....we're all emotivists now.

"Off w' heez hot?" Nay, off w' heez hade ! St. A. & Ed. = ancient primatial See of Scottish Kingdom. Ergo, a Cardinal. But, why not Conti, too ? Maybe next time. Catholic Church in auld Scotia needs a boost, now that the established Kirk is dying.

As someone of Scottish descent, and a convert, I deplore these intellectually vacuous comments by the wee nee Cardinal. Off with his hat!
