eNewsletter Subject: The Seal of Confession Defended

From a spiritual point of view, I would say one of the most important documents this week is the official Catholic response to the Louisiana Supreme Court's effort to crack the privacy of the Sacrament of Penance: Official Statement of the Diocese of Baton Rouge Regarding Order for Priest to Break Confessional Seal.

Similarly, it has been a long series of bad court decisions which makes Phil Lawler ask a critical question—raised by the US Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Wheaton College: Will the next benchmark case be Supreme Court v. reality?

Phil also stepped back from the news for a few minutes this week to acquaint readers with some thought-provoking articles he hadn't had time to talk about earlier. See Catching up on Summer reading.

Meanwhile, I turned in a spiritual direction, raising my own questions about whether Preoccupation with salvation inhibits love. But lest some misunderstandings should emerge from that essay, I followed up today with clarifications in Living the Faith prescriptively....
