Catholics are being rather deliberately prodded toward frenzy by media coverage of Pope Francis' desire for more effective pastoral care of those who are divorced and remarried. I examine the pastoral-doctrinal issue briefly in Mercy for the Divorced and Remarried.

Phil Lawler looks at the obvious risks in the current situation in Dangerous dilution of Church teachings: making the exception the rule.

Phil also echoes Canonist Ed Peters' concern that the Impending Catholic debate on divorce could be more serious than the dispute over birth control.

But my own guess is that it's not the 1960s anymore. As weak as the episcopate is at times, it is in far better shape than a generation ago, when most bishops did nothing to support Catholic teaching. Moreover, weak as the Catholic laity are at times, they are far less inclined toward secular radicalism now. ...
