Two news stories today ought to dominate the reflections of Catholics, at least in America—though the same problems exist elsewhere:
- Archbishop Gomez relieves Cardinal Mahony of duties; Bishop Curry steps down: At last we have a decisive episcopal consequence for the problem of sexual abuse. This kind of discipline has long been needed, and not only on this issue. One key: An Archbishop does not trump a Cardinal without the Pope's consent.
- Obama administration offers new 'compromise' on HHS mandate: This offers a politically-calculated exemption for religious organizations that does nothing for the rights of any other employer or, for that matter, you or me. It should be a mistaken calculation.
Phil also wonders whether Bishop Robert Finn, whom he admires in many ways, is too compromised in the public eye to be an effective Catholic leader. It's a difficult subject, but it merits thought: The campaign to discredit Bishop Finn is not going to stop.
