Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance Into Jerusalem To The Resurrection (Pope Benedict XVI)
Why was Jesus rejected by the religious leaders of his day? Who was responsible for his death? Did he establish a Church to carry on his work? How did Jesus view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead and what does his resurrection mean? The story of Jesus raises these and other crucial questions. Benedict dares readers to grapple with the meaning of Jesus' life, teaching, death, and resurrection. Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection challenges both believers and unbelievers to decide who Jesus of Nazareth is and what he means for them.
Made in Russia For Eastern Christians, Pascha (Easter) is the Feast of Feasts and the most celebrated Christian holiday. Traditionally, for this day, Russian Christians prepare a wonderful classic dish called "Sirnaja Pashka" -made with eggs and dairy products. These ingredients are the foods the faithful abstained from during the Great Fast before Pascha. The ingredients are placed into a specially made "pasochnitsa," a mold consisting of four planks joined into a trapezoidal shape and dressed with a Cross and carved patterns.

This collection of Gregorian chant is a direct response to the Second Vatican Council's call for a book of simpler chants for the Mass. It contains authentic but simpler propers for all the seasons, solemnities, and major feasts of the liturgical year, the principal ritual and votive masses, the commons of saints, a shorter Kyriale, and all the chants for the Mass. All the texts (in Latin) are from the Ordinary Form. If you want to introduce Gregorian chant to your parish but are worried about the complexities of singing different, difficult chants on a weekly basis, look no further: Here is your sourcebook. Vatican Press, 1988, paperback, 515 pp. [Note: You may wish to check availability and pricing direct from the Vatican Press.] Called to our attention by Conor Cook.

Amazon Echo is the genie Alexa, an electronic, voice-activated assistant “who” can answer questions, report weather and commuting time, stream music on request, set alarms and timers, tell jokes, play Jeopardy with you, control compatible “smart” lights and appliances, and even get annoyed with you if you speak to her roughly (don’t ask how we know this). Echo has far-sensitive microphones and an amazing 360° speaker. Jeff Mirus is experimenting with Echo’s little sister, the Echo Dot (connected to Logitech’s Harmony Hub), to enable a visually-impaired relative to control entertainment devices by voice. Requires wifi.

Best-selling poet and essayist Kathleen Norris (The Cloister Walk) and illustrator Tomie de Paola (Strega Nona, The Clown of God) present the story of St. Benedict, father of Western monasticism, and his twin sister, St. Scholastica. De Paola's beautiful art illuminates the text almost in the manner of a medieval manuscript, bringing to life the childhood and personalities of these two saints, their path to religious life, the miracles they performed and their lifelong devotion to God.

This small statue (about a foot tall) is beautifully rendered in polyresin with imitation gold leaf. It can be used indoors or in a protected area outside. In landscaping, of course, a larger statue would be preferable, and a search for "Mary Statue" will bring up many options from tiny to life-size. As shown.

This album by Catholic pianist and composer Mark Christopher Brandt features eight totally improvised pieces: seven named after the gifts of the Holy Spirit and an eighth titled "Come Creator Spirit." This beautiful and exciting music was created on the spot in the studio, with no editing afterward. While few musicians have the skill and even fewer have the courage to do this, the artist does not boast in his own abilities but instead attributes all creativity to the Holy Spirit.

The Way of Beauty: Liturgy, Education, and Inspiration for Family, School, and College (David Clayton)
Artist David Clayton "describes how a true Catholic education is both a program of liturgical catechesis and an inculturation that aims for the supernatural transformation of the person so that he can in turn transfigure the whole culture through the divine beauty of his daily action." Training in beauty is of profound importance for the Christian life and its recovery is a prerequisite for Christian renewal. This book is especially for artists and educators of all kinds.
Dante's Divine Comedy is perhaps the Catholic work of art par excellence. As one of the greatest poems ever written it has moved countless readers and influenced artists of all kinds, while its rich theology has inspired more than one papal encyclical. This is Anthony Esolen's translation of the first part, Inferno, with the classic Gustave Dore illustrations. Make sure to get Paradiso and Purgatorio too, of course.
