Pope seen likely to visit Northern Ireland in 2012

March 14, 2011

A visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Ireland next year would probably include a trip to Northern Ireland, British officials believe.

A Foreign Office memo, reflecting on the Pope's trip to Great Britain last year, said that a papal visit to Northern Ireland "would take place in the context of a visit to Ireland as it is treated by all the main Christian churches as a single ecclesiastical unit." According to reports from Ireland--not yet confirmed by the Vatican--the Pope will visit Ireland in 2012, with his trip coinciding with the conclusion of the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin.

It would be wonderful if Pope Benedict were to visit NI. I would be delighted. I can't really afford to go to WYD Madrid this summer, so it would be most convenient if the Pope came to see me! =p
